Project K Year 10 Programme Minimize
Kelston Boys High School has been fortunate to participate in a youth development programme called Project K. Project K consists of three parts; a Wilderness Adventure, a Community Challenge and a Mentoring Partnership. The programme aims to help students achieve their full potential. Students who will most benefit are identified through a questionnaire completed by all students in year 10. After consultation with teachers and parents, some students are invited to take part, at no cost. Many thanks must go to the Trusts Charitable Foundation, who has funded this fantastic opportunity for these students.

 Project K Mentoring Minimize
Carefully screened and trained mentors are paired with students for 12 months to support them in achieving their goals. The mentors are friendly, objective listeners who help strengthen the positive changes made in the first two stages.

 Wilderness Adventure 2007 Minimize
This group kicked off their Wilderness Adventure in April 2007 in the Hunua Ranges. During training camp they did an overnight tramp, an abseil, daily runs and learnt all the “hard skills” required to see them through an expedition. Some of these were; how to cook, put up tents, pack a pack, outdoor safety, first aid, bush craft and even star navigation. The students also started to learn goal setting, leadership skills, how to work as a team and how to support and motivate themselves and each other.

The students then put all they learnt in training camp, into use over their 10 day expedition, tramping nearly 100kms throughout this spectacular region. In addition to tramping this group did a mud run and high ropes course. The group thrived in this challenging environment, whilst learning to overcome some cultural differences in a positive manner. Each student loved their time as leader and learnt many important skills that we hope will stick with them for life.

 Community Challenge 2007 Minimize
This group had a ‘jam-packed’ Community Challenge. They did an Amazing Race through Henderson & Kelston to learn about their local community, health & fitness sessions at local gyms, met the Warriors, and an AUT business & marketing course. For their Community Project the group fundraised by doing a walkathon. They raised over $700 and donated this to The Maori Women’s Refuge in Henderson.
