 About Us Minimize
My name is Daniel Samuela and I am the Pacific Island Dean for Kelston Boys High School.

As a Samoan with Tongan heritage as well as an old boy of this school I have a real heart for the Pasifika students and families of Kelston Boys High School. My role is to help bridge what has seemed to be a great divide between our school and the Pacific community that we serve. I do not only deal with at risk students but part of my role is to help celebrate the successes and achievements of our boys both inside and outside of the classroom.

Kelston Boys High School is blessed to have some top professionals on its teaching staff, with many of them being Pacific Islanders. We have Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island, Nuiean and Fijian staff members that not only educate but assist in creating an environment that is warm and productive, approachable and creative.

Many of our school leaders, prefects, sports captains are of Polynesian extraction and continue to do not only themselves and the school proud, but their families and our community. We utilize their great potential through mentoring those less able or those who lack direction.

We also have some great social service agencies that assist our at risk kids, such as the Pacific Island Safety and Prevention Project, The Village Trust and Youth Transitions.

Our school has had many prominent Pasifika students come through its gates, who would make their marks not only in sports but in theology, medicine, law, politics and the arts. With a greater partnership between school and our Pacific families we can continue to not only help mould responsible young men or good citizens but invest in to great innovators, role models and leaders.

 2010 Polyfest Minimize
This year Kelston Boys High School had four groups that participated in the annual Auckland Polyfest.

On the Thursday, the ever growing Fijian group led by Nathan Hughes and tutored by old boy Walter Whippy performed the meke, some contemporary dances and sang some beautifully harmonious Fijian hymns. The group had 20 boys many of them scholarship students who had experienced the polyfest for the very first time.

On the Friday was the performance of the three big competitive groups. First was the Tongan group that performed their Mako, and later their Taufakanuia. There were some large expectations following last year’s success but no trophies were gained this year, just fun and an expression of cultural pride. The group was well led by Philipe Tua’moehala and tutored by Feleti Finau.
The kapa haka group performing in the third division gained some placings’ in their section, and displayed great ability and mana particularly from group leaders Jacob Hiko and Katete Cassidy.
The best of the groups was probably the Samoan group, who through relentless practising and efficient organisation were unlucky to be placed second overall. Under the leadership of Mr George Fruean, Mr Felise Luafalealo and student leadership of Graeme Sua Poe, Tautua Faitotoa, Henry Faitotoa and Tone Nanai the group gained first in three out of the four compulsory dances. First in the fa’ataupati (slap dance), first in the pese o le aso ( song of the day), first in the sa’sa ( sitting down dance), and gained two second places in the entrances and exits. Much credit goes to the expert tutoring of Albert Fale and Sipili Fale.

Thank you to Colin Satele and Coca Cola for their provision of products, Artizan printing for their assistance and all the staff, students and families that put up with the long hours and demands of the festival preparation.

Once again a fantastic year of cultural awareness and celebration, lets hope that these efforts can be continued in producing quality work through out the year.
