In mathematics and statistics, students explore relationships in quantities, space, and data and learn to express these relationships in ways that help them to make sense of the world around them.
At KBHS Mathematics is compulsory up to Year 11. Students can then opt to study Calculus, Statistics or Practical Maths in Year 12 and Year 13.
ENGLISH AND LANGUAGES
In English, students study, use, and enjoy language and literature communicated orally, visually, or in writing.
At KBHS English is compulsory up to Year 12.
In learning languages, students learn to communicate in an additional language, develop their capacity to learn further languages, and explore different world views in relation to their own. Te Reo, Samoan and Japanese are the main subjects students can opt to study. New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) can be learnt if enough students opt into it.
In science, students explore how both the natural physical world and science itself work so that they can participate as critical, informed, and responsible citizens in a society in which science plays a significant role.
All Year 9 and Year 10 students study Science and all Year 11 students are expected to study a course in the sciences. In the Senior school, sciences branches out into Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics.
ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY
In the arts, students explore, refine, and communicate ideas as they connect thinking, imagination, senses, and feelings to create works and respond to the works of others.
In technology, students learn to be innovative developers of products and systems and discerning consumers who will make a difference in the world.
Students must opt into any of the Arts and Technology subject offered at KBHS in the Junior and Senior School.
Arts: offers courses in Painting, Design, Photography, Art History, Music and Drama.
Technology: offers courses in Metal, Wood and Food Technology Graphics, Engineering Workskills for Automotive, Engineering Workshop, Furniture Making, Pre-Trade Carpentry Hospitality, Level 1 Digital Technologies, Level 2 Computing and Level 2 & 3 Natcoll Digital Print Design.
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In health and physical education, students learn about their own well-being, and that of others and society, in health-related and movement contexts.
All Year 9 and Year 10 students study Physical Education and Health. In the Senior school students can opt to do Physical Education, Sports Studies, Sports Leadership, Sports and Recreation and Sports Coaching or be invited to study in one of the specialised sports Institutes, currently being in Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Football and Rugby.
In the social sciences, students explore how societies work and how they themselves can participate and take action as critical, informed and responsible citizens.
At KBHS the Social Sciences subject all Year 9 and Year 10 students undertake is Social Studies, Students can also opt to take Business Studies in Year 10. Social Sciences then branches into Accounting, Economics, Financial Literacy, Geography, History, Pacific Studies and Tourism in the Senior School.
