Onewhero Hīkina Māori Bilingual Unit
"Hīkina te tama, kia tū motuhake, kia tū pakari i te ao Māori, i te ao Pākehā hoki."
“Uplift the young man, so that he may stand with confidence and strength in both the Māori world and the Pākehā world.”
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Ōnewherowhero Hīkina is a proudly established Māori bilingual learning pathway dedicated to empowering Māori learners. This unique unit provides a culturally grounded education where te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and mātauranga Māori form the foundation of everyday learning.
Through a responsive and inclusive curriculum, ngā ākonga Māori are supported to succeed confidently in both te ao Māori and te ao Pākehā. Ōnewherowhero Hīkina embraces kaupapa Māori pedagogy, honouring Māori ways of knowing, being, and doing and places high value on whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and ako.
The unit fosters a deep sense of identity, belonging, and pride, while equipping ākonga with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications they need to thrive in both worlds. It is a space where culture is celebrated, language is uplifted, and students are inspired to lead with confidence as Māori.
Onewhero Hīkina is open to Year 9 and 10 students. There are only 25 student placements available for each of the year levels.
